Weasdale winners announced

The experience of running a poetry competition has been such a positive one for Weasdale’s directors that they’ll probably do it again.

“This first one has been hugely enjoyable and full of surprises,” said Andrew Forsyth. “The final leg of the process was a very pleasant al fresco lunch with the judges, here at Weasdale, where the shortlist was whittled and fettled with unyielding discipline, an impressive clarity of purpose and equal measures of compassion and humour. And they all resisted the proffered glass of wine, preferring instead the clear mental palate afforded by elderflower cordial!”

The winners are:

1st: (£200) 16.07.2003 by Michael Conley, from Whalley Range in Manchester.
2nd: (£100) Callery Pear Trees, Manhattan by Alison Easton, from Low Bentham near Lancaster.
3rd: (£50) Aspens by Duncan Darbishire, from Ulverston.

The winner also receives a copy of the acclaimed Bloodaxe Books anthology Staying Alive, donated by the publisher. Weasdale Nurseries are donating 50p per competition entry to The Wordsworth Trust.

A prize-giving and reading of the winning entries will form part of Weasdale’s 60th anniversary Open Weekend, taking place (in the packing shed!) at 1.00pm on Sunday 11 July. For more information about the Open Weekend events, click here.
