The Third Way

Martyn Halsall

Third Way is an unashamedly Christian publication but, as such, aims both to bring a Christian perspective when examining contemporary society, and to inform thoughtful Christians about issues in that contemporary culture. Poetry editor Martyn Hallsall says:

“As poetry editor I try to present a range of poems that such Christians might enjoy, first because they are well-written and therefore intriguing, and second because they might have something to ‘say’ to people who feel spirituality is inherent and/or important in their lives.

To give an example: we ran Carol Ann Duffy’s Moments of Grace because it is an evocative summation of what love can be about; its re-publication celebrated her achievement in becoming Poet Laureate and, additionally, for people with a religious or theological curiosity and/or experience, it offered an exploration of what ‘grace’ (arguably here in ‘secular’ terms) might be.

To summarise: we don’t expect all poems to be overtly ‘religious’, and we don’t debar writers because they are not formally, or even inherently, Christians, or members of another faith community. Rather, I am seeking poems that will interest, intrigue and inspire a Christian readership, not least to seek further examples of that poet’s work and to bring their hearts, minds (and souls) into contact with poetry in general, to gain more informed and considered benefits and enjoyment from it.

Finally, we try to offer an ‘open house’: we have published both established poets and people whose work has not be published before.”

Published ten times a year, the magazine includes a poem with an accompanying graphic on a full page in each issue.
