That long expanse of sand at the edge of the Solway Firth might look empty, but you’re sure of a great surprise when you start looking at it in more detail.
The Solway shore features in Ann Lingard’s novel Seaside Pleasures, and she’s inviting you to join her on one of a series of informal guided rambles. Find out more about whelk eggs and worm-built reefs, underwater glues and mussel-power, sand dunes and sea-potatoes, submerged forests … and why Dickens and Wilkie Collins spent time there.
Starting from Mawbray Banks car-park (just opposite the Beckfoot Nursery and Bistro) and lasting 1½ – 2 hours (depending on the weather), walks are scheduled as follows:
Wednesday 30 June, 10.00 am.
Wednesday 7 July, 3.00pm
Friday 16 July, 10.00am
Sunday 15 August, 11.00 am.
Saturday 11 September, 9.30m (for a very low tide).
Wednesday 22 September, 3.00pm.
Each walk will be for a maximum of 12 people – please book in advance by phoning Ann on 016973 21967 to reserve a place. Sorry, but all children must be accompanied by an adult.
Wear wellies (rather than walking boots – you might have to wade through shallow pools) and bring warm or waterproof clothing (it can be windy and cool on the shore even if the sun is shining).
The walks are free, but voluntary donations towards the guide’s travel and publicity expenses would be gratefully received!
Additional walks might be arranged if required.

This is a brilliant idea on Ann’s part. The Solway coast is a magical place so often overlooked by those drawn by the ‘big beasties’ in the central lakes. Sir. Walter Scott also recognised the allure of the ‘Plains’, which featured large in some of his novel. I shall def., be joining Ann on at least one of her Autumn walks despite living in Allonby!
