The Peter Wolff Theatre Trust Supports the Whiting Award

The Whiting Award supported by the Peter Wolff Trust will be hosted by the Birmingham Rep this autumn, and the award is now calling for plays to be submitted for consideration. This national playwriting award gives £6,000 to the writer of a new play that demonstrates an original and distinctive development in dramatic writing. Previous winners include Bryony Lavery, David Edgar, David Greig, Tanika Gupta, Terry Johnson, Joe Penhall, and Tom Stoppard, for whom the award was instrumental in launching his writing career. For this year’s award, eligible plays must have had their first performance between 1 August 2008 and 31 July 2009.
To be eligible to enter for the award the play must be:
* An original piece of writing. Plays created through a devising process, must have a named   writer to be eligible. Adaptations and verbatim theatre will not be considered.
* Produced by a company within the subsidised sector. (Subsidy being defined as funding of £1,000 or more from the Arts Council, a local government body, a trust or a foundation.)
* Produced under a professional contract to ITC, TWU, WGGB, or TMA guidelines.
* Performed for the first time in the UK during the award time period.
The Judges will use the following criteria to decide the award:
* A play in which the writing is of special quality
* A play of relevance and importance to contemporary life
* A play of potential value to British Theatre

Northern Voices
BBC writersroom, Northern Film & Media, Screen Yorkshire, and Northwest Vision + Media are searching for exceptional writers from the North who want to write drama for television.  If you have a strong individual voice, the ability to create great characters and tell compelling stories, and a real passion for television drama, you could take part in Northern Voices.
Northern Voices will provide training and development for up to four writers from each region to learn about writing for television drama from some of the most experienced producers and writers in the country. It will also provide the opportunity to develop an original TV drama calling card script with the support of a writer mentor.
How to apply to Northern Voices
The scheme is open to writers living within the North East, Yorkshire, or North West region who have already had a script commissioned or had a professional reading of their work (for any platform, film, radio, stage or TV).  Applicants must be over 18 and not in full-time or undergraduate education.

Calling all Playwrights…
Liverpool’s Write Now Festival is accepting submissions for its First Annual International Festival of One-Act Plays to be held at The Actor’s Studio, Seel Street, Liverpool in March and April 2010
Submission Guidelines:
Any one-act play submission will be accepted other than adaptations, musicals or children’s plays.
Length: 45 – 60 minutes
Settings should be simple or suggested.
Deadline  Friday 25th September 2009
Final selection of plays will be made by Friday 04 December 2009.
