Anne Pierson Award open for entries

The 2012 Anne Pierson Award for Young Writers in Cumbria is open for entries. Established in 2004, the Award is dedicated to encouraging and progressing young people’s interest and abilities in creative writing and to celebrating their achievements.

Situation Vacant – Poet in Residence, Grasmere

As jobs in the poetry world go, one of the plummest is here in Cumbria. The Wordsworth Trust is looking for a new Poet in Residence to work from the beginning of December until the end of September 2012.

In return, the incumbent gets a monthly stipend of £1,000 a month (untaxed, as the the contract is on a self-employed basis) and a cottage round the corner from Wordworth’s own at the knock-down rent of £45 a week, including Council Tax. Read more …

Poetry volunteers needed in Cockermouth

A dedicated group of poetry enthusiasts in the Cockermouth area are looking for volunteers to help produce and publish a major anthology of poems.

The Cockermouth Poems 1700-2011 is scheduled for publication in late 2011 /early 2012. It will feature poems by the 90-plus men and women from the UK and overseas who have Cockermouth connections – most have given readings in the town – and who have written and published poetry over the last 300 years. Short stories get short shrift at BBC Radio 4

From next spring, the number of short stories broadcast on Radio 4 will be reduced from three to one a week. The change is part of new Controller Gwyneth Williams’ first reorganisation of the BBC Radio 4 schedule, and appears to be a knock-on effect of extending The World At One by 15 minutes, from 7 November.

Young Writers Group at Theatre by the Lake

Theatre by the Lake’s young writers group will start again in September, led by Louie Ingham, an Associate Artist at the Dukes Theatre in Lancaster, where she also works extensively with their Creative Learning programmes.

Louie describes what participants can expect from the sessions: “It will be a 12 week practical programme of exploring and writing scripts for theatre. The young writers will work not only as writers, but also as actors and directors …”

Mungrisedale Writers Poetry Competition

That lively crowd of writers in lonely Mungrisdale have just announced that they’re running their first ever poetry competition.
