The world first heard of its ‘only consulting detective’ in 1887 with the publication of Arthur Conan Doyle’s A Study in Scarlet. The last six months have seen Anthony Horowitz’s ‘new’ Sherlock Holmes novel, A Study in Silk, the BBC’s acclaimed Sherlock, set in the present day, and Guy Ritchie’s film Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows.

Why have Doyle’s stories had such an impact on the public imagination? Dr Stephen Longstaffe will investigate by reading from Doyle’s favourite Holmes story, ‘The Adventure of the Speckled Band’, first filmed a century ago in 1912. The game is afoot!
